Teknologi photovoltaic merupakan teknologi yang memanfaatkan energy sinar matahari yang diserap oleh material semiconductor, sehingga electron bebas dan hole bebas tereksitasi. Tereksitasinya electron bebas ini akan menghasilkan arus.

The development of photovoltaic cells can be dated originally to Becquerel’s discovery in 1839 of aphotovoltage produced by the action of light on an electrode in an electrolyte solution. About 40 years later, Adams and Days observed the photovoltaic effect in selenium (Adam and Days, 1877). Solar efficiency of about one percent characterized selenium and copper oxide cells by about 1914. The modern era of semiconductor photovoltaic started in 1954 when Chapin, Fuller and Pearson obtained a solar efficiency of six percent for silicon junction (Chapin et al., 1954), a value that was increased to 14 percent by 1958, and to 28 percent by 1988 (Verllinden et el., 1988).
